Dear parents,
Thursday's game against Washburn also marks the second year of the Sylvester Cup. John Sylvester is a graduate of Washburn and served as the girls coaching director for Minneapolis United for many years. He has also been the coach for many of the girls who play for Southwest and Washburn. Several years ago, John was diagnosed with ALS. As a way to recognize all he has done for soccer in southwest Minneapolis, the Sylvester Cup was started last year with a trophy going to the winner of the girls and boys varsity games. This year, a joint effort between the two high schools has organized an ice bucket challenge to raise money for ALS research. Both the girls teams will be participating in the challenge between the two varsity games. Each player has been asked to contribute at least $20 which will be donated to the ALS Foundation. My daughter, Sarah, will be collecting money for our team. She asks that girls get her the money tonight or before the game tomorrow so they can announce how much has been raised by the students. You can give her cash or a check made out to the ALS Foundation.
I am proud of the girls who have organized this on their own in order to support John as well as bring recognition to this horrible disease. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Katie
